[We should not be putting civil rights issues to a popular vote, to be subject to the sentiments, to the passions of the day. No minority should have their rights subject to the passions and the sentiments of the majority.]

Newark Mayor Cory Booker Responds to a Question about the NJ Marriage Equality Referendum

Booker 2016

See, this is how you talk about it.

You DON’T say “marriage equality is JUST LIKE the separate but equal stuff POC dealt with, come on folks, this is civil rights all over again, gay is the new black!”

You say, “this is a civil rights issue, and it should be a given, not something voted for; this is a minority.”

I want Cory Booker to be the second African American guy to become President, after we get a few African American women in there.

“I can’t imagine I have to explain this to anyone in 2012, but if you find yourself putting brown makeup on a white person in 2012 so they can do a bad “funny” accent in order to sell potato chips, you are on the wrong course. Make some different decisions.” - Anil Dash

“When I want to know what misogyny is, I don’t ask a man. When I want to know what racism is, I don’t ask a white person. When I want to know what homophobia is, I don’t ask a heterosexual. When I want to know what transphobia is, I don’t ask a cisgender person. When I want to know what ableism is, I don’t ask an able-bodied person. The contours and definitions of oppression are best articulated by the oppressed.”

Check your privilege: learn from someone who knows first hand, because unless you’re part of the oppressed group, you can’t know or empathize.
